‘I can’t write’ is a comment I hear from people who then go on to tell me a fascinating story. As a species we are natural story tellers-it’s just that darned blank page that puts us into a panic. This worthwhile “write-athon” may be something you think is not for you. So can I suggest you start with this….
I go to a local writers’ group in the glorious hills of Derbyshire and we have to do write something in 20 minutes on a given subject. I poise my pen, my mind goes blank and then I form the beginning of a letter. I have no idea where it comes from, but off I go. Try it. Think of what you have done this morning in these strange times and just put that pen on the paper. Give yourself a deadline of 20 minutes, you might be surprised what you come up. I’m always astonished!
And feel free to borrow the inspiring message of the little badge I bought at Hay Literary Festival years ago kept me going when I first put pen to paper to write a novel in my 60’s. I kept it on my desk until I wrote those magical words: “The End.”
