"Never think you can’t write – you can. If you can speak, you can write. If you can understand this, you are fully qualified to tell a story of your own. It will belong to you; you can select and create and mix up and omit anything you want. Just start at once, on any old paper or screen or tablet. Start anywhere in the story, at the end if you like, but above all, start. It will be the best thing you have done for ages. When you have finished it (it will never feel perfect), get the sponsorship and send it together with your composition to us at The Big Story. There! You are already fabulous. A thousand thanks!"
We are inviting you to join The Big Story challenge that will help us all to cope with the self-isolating that accompanies the fight against the Coronavirus. More than that, this is your chance to be creative and positive while the rest of the world is shutting down. And by writing The Big Story you can help a great cause. We are inviting friends and family to encourage you with a little sponsorship that through The Big Story can be doubled in value and support registered charity ChoraChori in its vital work with the most vulnerable children in Nepal.
The challenge is for you to write a short memoir, a reflection on childhood and of your early years. Or, if you are still at school, tell us what life is like for you now and your plans for the future. We are looking for positive stories that will inspire or amuse us.
The challenge is open to people of all ages, anywhere in the world (although your story must be in English!). Whether you’re off school and bored, or a senior citizen who’s feeling a bit out on a limb – or aged somewhere in between with time on your hands for a change. You may never have written anything this substantial for pleasure before as, until now, you’ve never had the space in your life to apply yourself to sharing your Big Story. Who knows, this could be the start of something really BIG?
ChoraChori’s Founder, Philip Holmes, completed his memoir, Gates of Bronze, in 2019. And it all started with just a few notes!
If you are at school or a senior citizen, you need to write up to 1,500 words. If you are between 18 and 60, you should aim to write up to 3,000 words. We’d like to hear about your life past or present, a mini-memoir with a focus on childhood and reflections on growing up. Get writing and collecting your sponsorship!
All sponsorship must be paid in using a donation button that will appear on this site. Entries that don’t have sponsorship will not be considered. For those who pay in at the start of the week, all sponsorship proceeds will automatically double in value. £25 becomes £50!
All entries will be reviewed by our independent panels of judges, who will first certify that none of their friends or family members have entered the challenge. For each category, there will be a winner and two runners-up. Judges’ decisions are, of course, final.
During the final week, we will announce the winners, starting with the runners up in each category. We will award prizes of gift vouchers of £200, £100 and £50. But, most exciting of all, winning entries will be read by prominent friends of the charity.
